A medical bill review checks each charge on a bill against what happened and what insurance should pay, looking for things like duplicates, wrong codes, and charges Medicare should have covered. Bill Review Coach is an automated bill review and coaching service for people on Medicare and their families: you upload a bill, the software checks it, and you get back a plain-English game plan with scripts. No person reviews your bill, and Bill Review Coach never calls anyone for you. You make the calls.
What does a medical bill review look for?
Any careful review, whether you do it yourself or use a service, checks:
- Duplicates. The same service listed twice. See duplicate charges on a medical bill.
- Wrong or mismatched codes. See what a CPT code is.
- Services you didn't get.
- Amounts above what Medicare allows, using the "maximum you may be billed" on your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN).
- Charges insurance should have covered but that were billed to you.
You can do this yourself. Common medical billing errors seniors should check for and how to read a medical bill walk you through it.
How does Bill Review Coach work?
- You upload the bill. Snap a photo or upload a PDF. Adding your MSN or plan Explanation of Benefits (EOB) helps the check.
- The software reads every line. It reads the amounts, billing codes, and dates, and looks for possible problems like the ones above.
- A second automated check confirms each finding. A separate check compares each finding to your bill: the amounts, codes, and dates. Findings it can't confirm are re-checked, and if they still can't be confirmed, they're left out and you're told so.
- You get a game plan. It includes the findings in plain English, step-by-step instructions, a phone script, and an email or letter template.
- You make the calls. You decide what to do and contact the billing office, Medicare, or your plan yourself.
What doesn't Bill Review Coach do?
Being clear about this matters:
- No person looks at your bill. The review is automated.
- It doesn't call, write, negotiate, or dispute for you. You stay in charge.
- It's coaching, not legal advice. A finding is something to ask about. The billing office or your insurer makes the final call.
- It can't make every bill smaller. Some bills turn out to be right.
- It never asks for ID numbers. Bill Review Coach never asks for your Medicare Number, member ID numbers, or Social Security number.
What if I have questions about my game plan?
Each bill comes with "Ask about this plan," which lets you ask up to 10 questions about that bill. For example, you can ask what a line means or how to word something on the phone.
If a billing office or insurer says no, you can paste their reply into the question box and get suggestions for what to say next. You still make the next call or send the next email yourself.
Can family members help?
Yes. Family helpers join free. Once you invite them, they can see your game plans, send bills to your account, and use "Ask about this plan" too. That way, an adult child and a parent can work from the same game plan, even from different places.
How much does Bill Review Coach cost?
Your first bill review is free, and no card is needed. After that, it's $29 a month, tax included. You can cancel any time from your dashboard.
